Search Engines
Being able to find your web site on-line is very important, but is your website doing all it can to fully represent its content to the search engines? If your website was built more than three years ago the answer could well be ’No’.
In the early days, search engines checked your meta-keywords to find out what your site was about. People learned to cheat the system and get a better listing despite the fact that their site wasn’t related to the keywords in question. Search engines rarely look at your meta-keywords anymore.
Now-a-days successful search engines are successful because they provide good results. People are finding clever ways to cheat the system but the Search engines are fighting back and overcoming these clever cheats. The lesson to be learned here is that cheating the system may work in the short term but you can easily be punished by the search engines in the long term.
Any Search Engine Organisation that promises to get you a top spot may be able to get a top spot by cleverly cheating the system, but you’ve got to remember that Google employs the smartest people on the planet. They’ve only got to be cleverer than you once to blacklist you from the Search listings.
?So how can I make my site popular in the search engines?? you ask.
The first thing to do is make sure that the search engine understands what your site is about. If your site uses graphics and images instead of text then the search engine won’t be able to read it. If you can’t understand what a web site is about with the images turned off then neither will a search engine. Also, splash pages are a big no-no.
All Civicnet sites created since Jan 2005 are WC3 compliant. This means that (among other things) the site can be read by search engines with no problems.
Another service we offer is preparing Google Sitemaps. These sitemaps provide the Google search engine with important information about each page on your site and ultimately make your site easier to find and index.
